What Is the Ideal Temperature Setting?

According to the United States Department of Energy, the general standard setting for both tankless and tank type water heaters is 120° Fahrenheit. This is the most practical temperature to operate the system efficiently without sacrificing comfort or driving up your utility costs.

It also slows the production of mineral scale in the pipes, thereby helping protect the integrity of the plumbing system and minimizing the odds of damaging corrosion.  Appliances that require higher temperature settings, such as dishwashers with sanitizing cycles, have built-in mechanisms that boost heat levels as needed.

Setting your water heater to a higher temperature may increase the risk of being scalded due to hot water exposure.  Children and the elderly are particularly vulnerable because their skin is thinner and more susceptible to burning.

Whether you’re concerned about the condition of your water heater or interested in installing a new unit, you can trust in the professionals at Pelner-Williams Plumbing & Heating.
