Kids play hard, and their clothes often reflect this. Between work, play, and growth, children go through huge amounts of clothing in short periods, and parents often wonder how to make their wardrobes last a little longer. Luckily, learning some basic skills and keeping some sewing materials on hand can save you money and shopping time.

What Sewing Skills Should You Learn to Repair Your Children's Clothes?

1. Sewing on a Button

Buttons frequently detach from adults' clothing, but this nuisance is even more common with kids. Learning to sew on a button can help you get the most mileage out of winter jackets and versatile button-down shirts that kids need for school and church.

Knowing this easy sewing trick can help you rescue hand-me-downs from family and friends that they would have thrown out. This not only saves you money but is good for the environment as well.

2. Making and Letting Out Hems

You will inevitably buy clothing that is too long for your children. Being able to hem garments to shorten them—as well as knowing how to undo those hems later—is a useful skill.

You can buy pants or skirts when they're on sale and adjust them accordingly based on your know-how and the sewing materials around your house. This can add a couple of years to jeans and other essentials for your growing kids.

3. Patching Holes

Children are notoriously hard on pants. The knees of jeans and leggings get worn out quickly through so much time playing on the floor and outside. When you couple wear and tear with how quickly they outgrow outfits, it almost feels pointless to buy them.

Fortunately, learning how to patch holes can extend the shelf life of their clothes. Patching may not be appropriate for their school or special event clothes, but if you have designated play clothes, patching can still save you time and money.
