Your heater needs upkeep to run efficiently and reach its expected life span. There are many tasks you and an HVAC contractor should perform during the winter to ensure optimal performance. Here’s a helpful checklist to follow.

Winter Maintenance Guide for HVAC Systems

1. Cover the Outdoor Unit

During the winter, ice buildup around the outdoor unit can cause corrosion. Animals might also nest inside the vents to seek shelter from the cold, compromising airflow.

To protect your system, cover it up, preferably before the first snow. First, disconnect the power, then pull out any leaves or other debris from the unit’s vents. Wrap it with a weather-resistant air conditioner cover.

2. Change the Filters

HVAC contractorBoth your AC and furnace use filters to collect dust, pollen, pet dander, and other irritants, improving your indoor air quality. Filters also keep most dust out of the HVAC unit’s interior to protect airflow, ensuring your home remains at a comfortable temperature.

Filters become clogged with debris about every one to three months. Check them throughout the winter by holding them up to the light. If you can’t see light through a filter, replace it.

3. Schedule an Inspection

Getting the system professionally serviced improves its safety and performance. For example, an HVAC contractor will check the fuel line and connections to ensure the gas supply is safely sealed to the unit, reducing the risk of poisoning and fire. A professional will also inspect the electronics and controls for loose wires, which could lead to malfunctions.

If you haven’t already, schedule a maintenance appointment. Your HVAC contractor will clean off the burners and pilot light, then clear the condensate drain to prevent ignition problems. They will also lubricate the internal moving parts to ensure the equipment runs smoothly so you’re comfortable throughout the season.
