In the height of summer, it's an inconvenience when your air conditioner malfunctions. If it blows out warm air, the unit can't help the home maintain a comfortable temperature. If this is happening to you, you may or may not need AC repairs. To determine whether that's true, take note of the following.

Why an AC Might Blow Out Hot Air

1. Incorrect Setting

If you have an HVAC system that also functions as a heater, your AC may accidentally be on the "heat" setting. If someone has a heavy hand, it's easy to press the button twice and leave it in the wrong setting.

Make sure to have the fan set to "auto" as well. This will ensure that the fan only blows when cool air is being generated. Having it "on" will make the fan blow continuously, and you might mistake the non-cold air for hot air.

2. Insufficient Refrigerant

Refrigerant is essential for the unit's functionality as it absorbs heat from the surrounding atmosphere and cools it. If there isn't enough refrigerant, you'll only have hot air blowing through.

However, because of its toxicity, refrigerant must be handled with care and should only be refilled by professional AC repair technicians. There's also a chance there's a leak, in which case, the line may have to be patched up or replaced.

3. Dirty Outdoor Unit

Also known as a condenser, the outdoor unit of your AC is critical to the process of allowing refrigerant to flow and absorbing the surrounding heat. If there's too much dirt and debris on this unit, it blocks the airflow and prevents it from doing its job. If you're keeping it clean and there are still problems, there may be damage, it's probably time for AC repairs.
