The arrival of spring means you'll soon be shutting down your gas furnace and switching to air conditioning. Along with other essential maintenance, shutting off gas heating equipment is recommended for your safety and peace of mind. Here are a few steps you can take to effectively turn off your furnace at the end of the season.

3 Things to Do With Your Furnace at the End of the Season

1. Turn Off the Gas Valve

Your furnace has a pilot light, which uses gas as fuel. Pilot lights are crucial for igniting the burners inside the device, which then provide warm air to your home. Turning off the gas valve connected to the pilot light can save you money during the spring and summer months, while also preventing a possible gas leak. To shut off the valve, locate the pilot light. There should be a switch somewhere near the pilot light adjacent to the gas line. Turn the switch in the off position and check to see if the pilot light has been extinguished.

2. Change the Air Filter

Air filters prevent airborne contaminants, such as pollen and dust, from being circulated around the home. They also ensure good airflow into the machine, which enhances efficiency and function. In general, you should replace the air filter once every three months. However, it's also a good idea to change the filter at the end of the season. That way, you can rest assured that your furnace will be ready to go once winter rolls around again.

3. Create a Clearance Around the Furnace

Keeping the area clear around your furnace serves two important purposes. First, it ensures there are no flammable materials in proximity of the furnace, which creates a fire hazard. Second, it allows sufficient airflow into the device, which improves function and efficiency. While you should clear the area around your furnace during the winter, it doesn't hurt to check the area at the end of the season to make certain it's clutter-free.
