Fall is an excellent time to ensure your HVAC system is ready for lower temperatures that will be coming within the next few months. Taking a few steps now will get your equipment in good working order for cold weather. Here's how to prepare for a comfortable heating season.

How to Maintain Your HVAC This Fall

1. Clean Around the Outdoor Unit

Autumn brings falling leaves and twigs. This organic matter can block the AC outdoor unit's vents and pipes. After shutting off the AC for the season, don't forget to sweep around the outdoor unit and remove any built-up debris that has accumulated all summer long. Once the area around the unit is clear, cover it to guard against damage from ice, snow, outdoor pests, and wildlife.

2. Replace Air Filters

HVAC

Your HVAC system circulates air that passes through air filters. These filters catch particles such as dust, pet dander, and pollen. When the filter becomes dirty or clogged, the blockage limits airflow. The system uses more energy to compensate for the reduced flow, and it runs less efficiently. If your furnace or air conditioning system has removable filters, take them out and clean or replace them.

3. Check Ductwork and Windows

Before turning on the furnace for the fall, check the HVAC system and ductwork. When air ducts leak, the system loses heated air and your home might not get as warm as you want. This lost heat costs money in the form of higher energy bills.

Additionally, ensure that the windows are closed tight and replace any missing caulking, seals, or insulation. Install or test smoke detectors and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors which will alert you if the furnace releases toxic fumes in your home.
