Ductless mini-splits are some of the most sophisticated, energy-efficient HVAC systems on the market. Not only do they give you more precise control of the temperature in your home, but they’re also less expensive to operate and easier to maintain. However, they do require some upkeep to keep your home comfortable through a cold Ohio winter.

How to Keep Your Ductless Mini-Split Running Through the Winter

1. Clean the Air Filter

Most traditional HVAC systems have a whole-house filter that cleans all the air going into your AC or furnace. Ductless mini-splits, on the other hand, have individual filters on each device inside the house.

Every four to six weeks, remove and clean the filter according to the instructions in your owner’s manual. This will help keep your indoor air clean and reduce wear-and-tear on your valuable HVAC equipment.

2. Keep Snow Off the Exterior Unit

The exterior unit of your ductless mini-split requires ample airflow, so it should be sheltered from the snow. Ideally, your HVAC technician would have installed the unit under an overhang, so you may not have to deal with snow accumulation.

Brush off any snow you see building up on the exterior unit. If the issue seems to keep occurring, you may want to call an HVAC technician to reposition the exterior component.

3. Use the Defrost Setting

Like any HVAC system, ductless mini-splits create moisture, which can build up on the condenser coil. As temperatures drop below freezing, this water turns into ice, potentially causing extensive damage that can be expensive to repair.

Ductless mini-splits include innovative features like a defrost setting, which keeps water inside the unit from freezing. Your HVAC tech might also recommend installing a heater in the drain pan to prevent ice from forming.
