Whether it’s on the trails, treadmill, or pavement, running can put a lot of strain on your feet. While new runners are especially prone to issues if they increase their mileage too quickly, seasoned runners can also experience wear-and-tear injuries that come from years of practicing the sport. If you’re a runner, here's what you should know about foot problems

What Are the Most Common Foot Injuries in Runners?

One of the most common foot problems in runners is plantar fasciitis. This issue occurs when the fascial ligament, or the thick band of tissue which runs along the bottom of the foot, becomes painful and inflamed. Runners can also experience stress fractures, or tiny cracks in the bone caused by repetitive stress. This often occurs in the metatarsal bone, the long bone that attaches to the toes. Additionally, tendonitis in the Achilles tendon or tendons on the top of the foot may also develop.

How Can Foot Issues Be Treated?

Treatments for running-related foot problems will depend on the exact nature of the injury. For example, most mild foot injuries may respond well to rest, stretching, icing, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Persistent issues that don’t get resolved through these home remedies may require additional treatment, such as braces or shoe inserts, to help the injury heal effectively. Some patients may also need physical therapy or surgery.

How Can You Prevent Foot Problems?

Fortunately, in many cases, foot problems can be prevented in runners. Shoes that fit properly and have just the right amount of arch support, room for the toes, and cushioning will help runners avoid many injuries. Certain runners may also need custom orthotics, such as those with flat feet or especially high arches. This additional, customized support can be especially beneficial for athletes training for events that require them to regularly run long distances. Additionally, runners should increase their workload gradually. Ideally, you should run no more than 10% further or longer than you did the previous week. Additionally, stretching the feet and wearing supporting shoes during your downtime can also aid in injury prevention.
