Working at a computer screen or using another digital device for extended periods can cause eye strain, or Computer Vision Syndrome. How to Reduce Computer Vision Syndrome Symptoms

1. Look Away Often

Utilize the 20-20-20 rule to give your eyes a break from the screen. Look at something at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes to minimize stress and fatigue on eye focusing muscles. 

Other exercises that reduce eye muscle strain include looking at a faraway object for 10 to 15 seconds, then peering at something up close for 10 to 15 seconds. Repeat the exercise 10 times daily to prevent strain and spasms from constant focusing.  

2. Adjust the Lighting

Fix the lighting in your workstation so the screen isn’t the brightest thing in the space. Avoid working under harsh overhead lights or near a window with sunlight streaming in since both issues cause glare and subsequently eye strain. 

Work with windows behind you so natural light is on both sides of the screen and replace bulbs in overhead lights with lower wattage versions. If you use a desk lamp, point it down, so it doesn’t shine on your face or the screen. 

3. Maintain Eye Hydration

Rock glasses over contact lenses for long screen sessions. Wearing contact lenses while working extended hours at a computer dries the eyes out quickly, especially if you do not use eye drops or blink often. 

Consider glasses with anti-glare coatings for further protection against Computer Vision Syndrome. Also, use a humidifier and keep water within reach since dry air and dehydration exacerbate dry eye symptoms.
