Glaucoma is a common eye condition that affects the optic nerve in your eye. It tends to run in families, and many people don't see signs of it until later in life. However, it's always wise to watch for indicators that your eye health may be declining, and to reach out to an eye doctor for help as needed. Here are a few signs of glaucoma that you should watch for.

3 Common Indicators of Glaucoma

1. Light Halos

It's normal to see a faint halo when you're looking directly at a light source. However, glaucoma often intensifies this effect. You might even see rainbow-colored circles around bright lights as the disease progresses. If you notice any changes in the way that your eyes react to or process light, you'll want to get in touch with your eye doctor for a routine examination.

2. Loss of Vision

There are two types of glaucoma: open-angle and acute-angle closure. In open-angle cases, people rarely realize that their vision is changing since any loss is gradual and slight. By contrast, in acute-angle cases, vision loss may be rapid and very noticeable.

Vision can change in a variety of ways. You may notice patches of blurred or darkened areas or overall diminished sight. Any changes are cause for concern, and vision loss due to glaucoma is irreversible. However, ophthalmologists can perform procedures that alleviate your internal eye pressure and help mitigate the effects of the disease, so be sure to contact your eye doctor if your vision is evolving.

3. Pain

Acute-angle closure glaucoma is known for causing pain. Both forms of glaucoma involve pressure increases inside of your eyes. These increases can lead to eye pain, redness, swelling, throbbing, and other forms of discomfort.

Additionally, you might feel nauseous or lightheaded as the condition advances. Pain isn't as prominent in the early stages of open-angle glaucoma, but it eventually causes discomfort as your eye pressure increases.
