Glaucoma is a group of diseases that causes damage to the optic nerve, which is responsible for sending visual information from the eye to the brain. Over time, it can begin to impair eyesight or even lead to blindness. Thus, getting regular eye exams is key for catching this progressive condition early and preventing permanent vision loss. Anyone can develop glaucoma, but the following factors can put you at greater risk.

How to Know if You’re at Risk for Glaucoma

1. Eye Pressure

High eye pressure is commonly associated with glaucoma. This may occur due to a faulty eye-drainage system, excess eye fluid, steroid use, or trauma to the eye. When elevated pressure is detected, optometrists often use medication, laser treatment, or surgery to help reduce it.

2. Genetics

Unfortunately, glaucoma can be inherited through genetics. Oftentimes, those diagnosed with the disease will discover that it runs in their family. Therefore, if any of your parents, siblings, or grandparents have or had it, there are increased odds of you getting it.

3. Age & Ethnicity

Glaucoma tends to be more prevalent in specific age groups and ethnic backgrounds. According to the Glaucoma Research Foundation, patients over 60 years old are six times more likely to be diagnosed. African-Americans, Hispanics, and Asians also have a higher risk.

4. Certain Eye Problems

A patient’s general eye health can be a good indication of their chances of developing glaucoma. Previous eye injuries, extreme near- or farsightedness, thin corneas, and thinning of the optic nerve are frequently linked to the condition. These problems are easily recognizable in routine eye exams.

5. Pre-Existing Health Conditions

Some health conditions contribute to elevated eye pressure as well, thereby raising the risk for glaucoma. This includes diabetes, poor circulation, high blood pressure, migraines, heart disease, and sickle cell anemia. Smoking and long-term use of corticosteroid medications also appear to add to the likelihood of diagnosis.
