Most spider species in Kentucky don’t pose a serious threat to human health, but many people find it unpleasant to discover spiders in their home. A pest control expert can remove spiders so you feel comfortable and to reduce the risk of being bitten, which can be painful. This guide will help you to understand some of the common spiders of central Kentucky.

What Are Some of the Common Spiders Found in Central Kentucky?

1. Wolf Spider

One of the most prevalent species in central Kentucky, wolf spiders are found close to the ground in grassy areas and leaf litter. They are important to the ecosystem because they prey on other insects, including cockroaches and crop pests. They may bite humans if they feel threatened, but the symptoms are mild.

Wolf spiders have eight eyes, two of which are big and prominent, and their bodies usually grow up to 1 inch long. They are sometimes confused with nursery web spiders, but they have shorter legs. Their bodies are hairy and patterned with brown, gray, or black depending on the species.

2. Hobo Spider

pest controlHobo spiders are part of the funnel weaver family. They can be mistaken for wolf spiders, but unlike wolf spiders they build webs. Their bite may cause pain, redness, and twitching. Bites have been associated with necrotic skin lesions, a serious condition that causes the death of cells or tissue in a small area of the body. The evidence linking hobo spiders to this condition is unclear, but it’s best to have pest control remove these spiders to avoid being bitten.

3. American House Spider

About the size of a nickel, American house spiders are brown and have outstretched legs. They are often found in homes and other buildings. Because of their appearance, they are commonly confused with the brown recluse spider. However, the brown recluse is potentially dangerous, but the American house spider is harmless to humans unless someone is allergic to it. One major difference is that American house spiders are almost always seen in their webs.

4. Yellow Sac Spiders

This type of spider does not build a web and it roams at night to hunt prey such as insects. Yellow sac spiders are usually around a quarter of an inch long and are light yellow with a touch of green. Generally found outdoors, they sometimes wander into homes and bite humans when they accidentally encounter them.

These bites are not harmful unless the person who is bitten has an allergy, but they do cross paths with humans quite often due to the way they hunt. It’s therefore best to contact pest control for prevention advice if you spot a yellow sac spider.
