Many Mac® users believe that Apple® devices don’t get viruses. Unfortunately, this is not true. Although viruses on Mac systems are rare, malware is common. Malware can include anything from an intimidating email asking for money to a worm that tracks your online activities. Here are several ways you can protect your computer from these issues.

How to Protect Your Mac From Viruses

1. Keep Your Mac Operating System Up to date

With every new update, Apple will address common software issues, preventing viruses or malware from breaking into your computer. Thus, it’s vital to keep your Apple device up to date. You can automate your computer to check for updates. Open System Preferences, click on Software Update, and tick the small box beside Automatically keep my Mac up to date.

2. Install Antivirus Software

3. Create a Strong Password

Come up with an easy-to-remember phrase using uppercase letters and numbers. The longer the password, the harder it will be to decipher. With a simple password, such as password1234 or 12345678 (two of the most common passwords), an attacker can easily break into your computer and steal sensitive data.

4. Don’t Click on Unknown Links

Links sent via email are the easiest way for a virus to break into your Apple computer. Never click a link in an email unless you know who the sender is. This technique, called phishing, can allow hackers to steal your info, credit card numbers, or install a virus.

5. Back Up Your Data

If your Mac gets compromised, a backup will restore all your lost files. Get a backup hard drive that you can take with you. Apart from a physical copy, you should also back up your files to the cloud. Remember to make a strong password for the cloud storage, as third parties can access it, otherwise.
