What is it?

A central heating and cooling system relies on a network of hidden air ducts to push temperature-treated air into your living spaces. In contrast, a ductless system does not utilize ducts. Instead, an outdoor compressor connects to individual wall-mounted air handling units installed in rooms of your choosing. 

How does a ductless mini-split work?

Ductless mini-split systems work similarly to central air. In the summer, indoor air is pushed over refrigerant-filled evaporator coils, which absorb heat. The then-cooled air is then pumped back into rooms. The opposite process occurs during the winter. However, instead of air passing through ductwork to get to the coolant and then being redistributed back into your living spaces, each individual wall-mounted unit contains evaporator coils.

What are the benefits of this AC system?

With individual wall-mounted units in various rooms, you have more control over your temperature. This is referred to as zoned heating and cooling because you don't have to waste energy controlling the temperature of rooms that aren't in use. In addition, when you have a family with various temperature preferences, this allows everyone to change the space to their specifications. 

Because treated air doesn't have to travel through ducts that may contain leaks, this system is more energy-efficient. In addition, dust can't build up in ductwork that doesn't exist, limiting the amount of dirt, pollen, and other contaminants circulating through your home. 

How long does it take for an HVAC contractor to install this?

In general, ductless heating and cooling is a great choice when you need immediate relief from outdoor temperatures. After an initial walk-through with your HVAC contractor to determine the sizing and the right number of wall units for your home, the installation process can be incredibly fast. A small hole two to three inches in diameter will need to be drilled into your home to connect wall units to the outdoor compressor. Most installs can be completed in a day or two, which is faster than with a central AC system, especially if you have to replace existing ductwork.
