Without taking proper precautions, heavy farm equipment, like tractors, can be dangerous to operate. In fact, an estimated 100 agricultural workers lose work time because of an injury each day. Thankfully, following basic safety tips can reduce your chance of injury. Use this beginner’s guide to understand basic tractor safety.

How to Safely Operate a Tractor

1. Go Slowly Around Corners

Because a tractor’s center of gravity is so low, the wheels can become pivot points at higher speeds. This means there’s a risk of tipping the tractor over around corners, on slopes, or slippery surfaces. Even just doubling your speed can quadruple your risk of tipping. To avoid this, watch the road ahead and slow down in inclement situations, like muddy roads.

2. Inspect It Before Using

Crockett Farm EquipmentBefore operating your tractor or any other farm equipment, inspect the wheels for nicks or breaks. Make sure all the safety mechanisms work, like the breaks and seat belts. If you find any damage, consult the tractor dealer before using the machine. Finally, check the oil and gas levels before starting the equipment. Running out of oil or gas on the job can leave you stranded. Fill the tank at the end of each use or as necessary.

3. Avoid Embankments

A heavy tractor can cause the ground around an embankment or ditch to crumble. When this happens, you risk falling into a ditch or getting stuck in a hole. Always keep farm equipment behind the shear line, and stay as far away from the edge as the embankment is deep. For example, keep any farm equipment at least five feet away from the edge of a five-foot deep ditch.
