When raising a child, trying to get them to do certain tasks can be a chore for both of you. When they're sick, it's even more difficult, especially with the added worry. However, no matter what kind of medication you've had to pick up from the pharmacy, there are ways to make the process easier. Here's what you need to know.

How to Help Your Kid Take Medication

1. Be Upfront About the Contents

It's always best to be honest with your kid about any medication they must take. This is particularly important if they have to take it for an extended amount of time, such as an antibiotic that needs to be taken for several days. Hiding it in a drink or food isn't inherently inappropriate; rather, it's the sense of deception that follows that is the problem. If they find out you've tricked them, that can make them more distrustful and suspicious, which will cause more problems in the future. The other risk of trying to conceal it without them knowing is they may be too full to eat another bite or finish their drink, and they won't take the full dosage.

2. Mix It With Something

As mentioned above, as long as you're upfront about the medication, feel free to mix or hide it in a food or beverage. Make sure to consult the pharmacist if it's safe to do so. If it's a liquid medication, you can ask the pharmacy if they can flavor it with a product called "FLAVORx." This is an inert, dye-free, sugar-free, and allergy-safe flavoring designed to make medications more palatable. They come in kid-friendly flavors like strawberry, orange, watermelon, and grape.

3. Tie It to a Fun Activity or Treat

Providing an incentive can also motivate your child. For example, after they take their medication, you can play a game with them or maybe even give them some of their favorite food as a treat. Some kids may prefer something like stickers or extra screen time instead. If the medication is something they have to take long-term, the next time you go to the pharmacy, consider allowing them to pick out a little toy or something on the way home.
