An abscessed tooth is a painful pocket of pus caused by a bacterial infection. When left untreated, the infection may spread and become life-threatening. During treatment, your dentist will drain the abscess, get rid of the infection—usually with antibiotics—and then either extract the affected tooth or save it via root canal. As you wait for your appointment, try these home remedies to ease the pain of an abscessed tooth.

How to Care for Your Abscessed Tooth Before Your Dentist Appointment

1. Saltwater Rinse

Rinsing your mouth with saltwater up to three times a day can help soothe pain and wash away bacteria and pus. Just mix a half teaspoon of table salt with a half cup of warm tap water and swish the mixture around your mouth for at least two minutes.

2. Cold Compress

To decrease pain and swelling, try making a cold compress. Put some ice cubes in a dry towel and hold the towel against your skin near the abscessed area for 15 minutes. Repeat throughout the day as needed.

3. Garlic

dentistAlthough it may surprise you, garlic has a long history as a natural pain manager and bacteria killer. Use it to soothe your abscessed tooth by crushing a fresh clove of garlic into a paste and rubbing the paste on the affected area. Repeat throughout the day as needed.

4. Clove Essential Oil

Because it contains eugenol, which has anesthetic and antibacterial properties, clove essential oil can temporarily numb an abscessed area and reduce pain. Up to three times a day, dilute the oil with a carrier oil and apply a few drops to the affected area using a cotton ball or swab. Avoid ingesting a large amount of clove oil, as you may experience shallow breathing, rapid heartbeat, and other health issues that require emergency care.

5. Oregano Essential Oil

With antibacterial and antioxidant properties, oregano oil can help decrease pain and swelling. Dilute the oil, apply a few drops to a cotton ball or swab, and hold it on the affected area for two to three minutes. After removing the ball or swab, wait 10 minutes and then rinse. Repeat up to three times a day.
