As your loved one gets older, accessibility and convenience become a priority throughout the home. One room that requires special attention is the bathroom, as this is a place where slip and falls are more common. Follow the bathroom remodel guide below to create a space that they will be safe and comfortable in.

5 Features to Include in a Bathroom Remodel

1. Install Grab Bars

Grab bars provide stability, and they’re very easy to add in. There should be two bars on the wall of a tub at both standing and sitting heights. All three walls of a shower should have them, and the grab bar should be near the controls for easy reaching. Have them next to the toilet as well; one side is acceptable, but a bar on either side is ideal if possible.

2. Choose a Walk-In Shower

3. Install Wheelchair-Friendly Shower Amenities

Choose a shower that is large enough for a wheelchair; it should be 5 feet wide and 3 feet deep. You may want to install a built-in seat underneath the shower head—there are also portable ones available. Avoid a shower door, as these can be tough to maneuver around, so install a shower curtain instead.

4. Raise Toilet Height

A higher toilet makes it easier for those with limited mobility to sit down and stand back up. Even with grab bars, the average toilet can be tough to get on and off. The seat should be at least 17 inches high.

5. Select Lever Handles

Arthritic hands have difficulty grasping knobs, so choose levers for all your handles. This includes on the entry door, the faucet handles, and all cabinetry hardware. This will make it easier for your loved one to grasp handles without compromising their joint health.
