The U.S. government provides posthumous grave markers, monuments, or medallions to veterans who served the country. If you or a loved one qualifies for such an honor, it often costs nothing and requires only the proper application. Use the following guide to help you request a military marker, monument, or medallion for a final resting place.

Who Qualifies for Veteran Grave Markers?

Grave markersAny veteran who did not receive a dishonorable discharge and who served a minimum of 24 months or died during active duty qualifies for grave marker benefits. Likewise, National Guard members and reservists who qualify for military retirement benefits are also eligible.

The Department of Veterans Affairs will furnish a gravestone or marker for any unmarked grave regardless of the veteran's date of death. For those who died after November 1, 1990, they will even provide a marker, medallion, or monument to supplement an existing marker.

Who Can Apply?

Only certain people can request this benefit. You must be an eligible veteran requesting the marker for yourself or the veterans next of kin.

Also, an authorized representative of either the veteran or the next of kin may file the request on their principal's behalf. A signed statement by the veteran or the next of kin should suffice.

How Do You Apply?

For a monument or grave marker, download and fill out VA form 40-1330. For a medallion to supplement an existing marker in a private cemetery, download and fill out form 40-1330M. Finally, submit your application by fax at (800) 455-7143 or standard mail. You must also include a copy of the veteran's discharge documents.
