Whether your existing phone is broken or damaged or you’re ready for an upgrade, buying a used iPhone® instead of a new one is a fantastic way to save money. When you buy from a reputable source, you can get a slightly used or refurbished device for a fraction of the cost of one fresh from the factory. However, you will need to take a few extra steps to get it unlocked.

3 Steps to Unlocking a Used iPhone

1. Research the Policy

Mobile carriers have different policies regarding unlocking devices. For instance, many carriers require the device to have been active on their network for a specific period before they’ll unlock it. Fortunately, the process is typically more straightforward when you want to start or continue service with that carrier; stopping service to switch to another provider is often more tedious.

2. Be Firm With Customer Service

3. Unlocked Doesn’t Always Mean It’s Compatible

Keep in mind that just because a device is unlocked doesn’t necessarily mean it’s compatible with other networks. Typically, any unlocked phone will work with a Global System for Mobile communications carrier, but it’s a good idea to check beforehand to ensure the phone you’re buying will work with your provider.
