Bowling may seem like a simple weekend activity to partake in with friends and family, but with any competition comes skills of the trade. Even if you aren’t planning to join a league, upping your game will only make the pastime more fun. Whitestone Lanes, of Flushing, NY, has been overseeing friendly competition for over 50 years, and they’re happy to give bowling enthusiasts a leg up when it comes to technique. Here, they explain how to “hook” a bowling ball the right way.
The Hook Shot Defined
During a successful hook shot, the bowling ball takes a curved path toward the pins instead of a straight one. This shape will allow you to hit the most possible pins and is the key to getting consistent strikes. If done right, the ball will also spin, hitting the pins like a hurricane and improving the chances of a pin ricochet. If you try to force this motion by jerking your wrist to the side when you throw the ball, it will likely land in the gutter — or worse, in the next lane over!
How to Master the Hook Shot
The arm has nothing to do with the curving motion of the hook shot, and you still need to swing it forward like the pendulum of a clock. To achieve the curved path, remove your thumb from the ball as you take your final step and allow the ball to drop downward. With the weight of the ball in your middle and ring fingers, flick your fingers counterclockwise as you release the bowling ball. If you’re left-handed, turn your fingers clockwise. At the same time, continue swinging your arm toward the pins. If you time the movement of your fingers and arm correctly, it will look as if your giving a handshake when the ball hits the lane.
