Mobility scooters have made it easier than ever to travel. If you’re gearing up for a flight, you’ll want to take a few steps to ensure there aren’t any complications at the airport. Our team at Dauterman Healthcare & Mobility is committed to ensuring our customers get the most from their mobility aids and want to offer the following advice for your upcoming trip.

4 Steps to Take Before Flying With a Mobility Scooter

1. Know What Type of Battery You Have

Airlines are strict about batteries. If you have a dry cell battery, you can keep this in the scooter because there’s no chance of liquids spilling. Wet cell batteries will need to be checked in the cabin because they can spill. If you have a lithium-ion battery, you’ll need to remove it.

If you’re unsure of what to do, contact the airline and airport to ask about their regulations and steps to take.

You don’t want your wheelchair to die in the airport, so charge it up until you leave the next day. Carry a charger in the airport and on the plane, so if your luggage is lost or you run low in the terminal, you’ll still be able to charge your mobility scooter.

3. Label & Document the Description

The last thing you want is to arrive at your destination to find your scooter is damaged, or worse, not there. Carefully label your scooter, including your name, phone number, and address, so the airline can contact you.

You’ll also want to take pictures of the scooter’s condition. If it’s damaged in transit, you’ll then have evidence to file an insurance claim so the airline can cover repair costs.

4. Schedule Reliable Travel

If your mobility scooter won’t fit into your car, make sure you have reliable travel to the airport. You may want to secure a private transport service or take advantage of public shuttles.

Since the service will have to load and unload your mobility scooter and pick up other guests, aim to get to the airport at least 3 hours before your flight.
