Technology is a part of everyday life, even for kids. From video games and cartoons to school assignments and texting, many kids use phones, tablets, and computers daily. While these devices can be beneficial in many ways, there are drawbacks, including the potential effect on vision. Eye care professionals advise using these four tips to help protect your kid’s vision.

How to Protect Your Child’s Eyes From Electronics

1. Practice the 20-20-20 Rule

Encourage your child to practice the 20-20-20 rule when using electronics, which means looking away from the screen every 20 minutes to focus on an object at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Eye care professionals say this helps the eyes readjust and rest to prevent eyestrain. It’s a good rule for everyone to follow, so set an example by doing it yourself at home and the office.

2. Hold the Device at an Angle

eye careBlue light emits directly from the screen. By positioning the device at a 30 or 40-degree angle, you can reduce the amount of blue light that enters your child’s eyes. For instance, instead of positioning a laptop screen at a straight vertical angle, bend it slightly back. You can also get a tablet or phone stand to utilize when they’re using these devices for long periods. Keep screens at least two feet away from the face as well.

3. Minimize Glare

Harsh glare from sunlight or overhead lighting can make eyestrain worse. Invest in glare-reducing screen protectors or choose devices with matte screen surfaces. You can also adjust window blinds if sunlight is an issue. If your child wears eyeglasses, consider a pair with anti-reflective coating to reduce glare from lenses.

4. Reduce Screen Time

The best way to protect your child’s eyes from screens is to reduce screen time entirely, whether it’s TV, video games, or surfing the web. Setting designated screen times is a good way to restrict use and ensure they have regular breaks between sessions.

In addition to adjusting everyday screen routines, visiting your child’s optometrist at least once a year is another essential part of eye care. If you’re a Honolulu, HI, resident, turn to Nelson O. Yoshioka, Jr., O.D. Since 1998, Dr. Yoshioka and his staff have provided exceptional eye care to Oahu families, from eye exams to glasses and contact lens prescriptions.
