Your home’s plumbing fixtures are designed to produce steady water pressure. Problems with the plumbing or main supply line can cause the liquid to come out at a trickle, making it harder to fill a container quickly, wash dishes efficiently, or bathe thoroughly. If your house experiences low water pressure, check for these common causes.

Why Is Your Home's Water Pressure Low?

1. Corrosion & Leaks

Pipes made of materials like steel and copper corrode over time, and even plastic components can shift and loosen at the joints. Leaks and burst pipes allow water to escape, so the pressure will be low when coming out of any plumbing fixture connected to the same system.

Restore proper pressure by locating the leak and tightening the joint or replacing the damaged piece. If you frequently develop multiple drips, it's a sign that you need to replace old plumbing with newer, more durable parts.

2. Clogged Pipes

While clogs are more common in sewer lines, they can also develop in the pipes that supply water to your home. Hard water leaves behind mineral deposits that can narrow a channel. This buildup can also block the openings in a bathroom or kitchen faucet and showerhead.

You may be able to remove exterior scale by soaking the affected area in a mild acid, like vinegar. If that doesn’t solve the issue, the affected plumbing fixture will need to be replaced, and you should also install a water softener to prevent future blockages.

3. Low Main Pressure

Sometimes the problem isn’t the plumbing fixtures, and the issue lies within the water supply. If you rely on a municipal system, you can install a pressure booster in your hope to improve the flow rate. However, if you have a well, low pressure could be due to the pump, or the well itself might not have enough water available; your installation company can help you determine the problem and recommend an adequate solution.
