What Should You Know Before Quilting With Batik Fabric?

1. Fabric Should Be Pre-Washed

Due to the way this fabric is created, there is a risk of colors smearing or running during handling. Reduce this risk by pre-washing the fabric before getting started on your project. Many types of batik fabric must be hand-washed, so check the label. 

2. There’s a Difference Between Front & Back

To the naked eye, batik fabric may appear similar on both sides. However, you can tell the front and back apart when you look closely: the backside tends to look duller, especially around the edges of patterns.

3. Batiks Can Feel Stiff

Because of its tighter weave, this fabric doesn’t have the soft, flowing feel of other types of quilting materials. But the more you wash the quilt, the softer it will become, so don’t be put off if you think it won’t be comfortable.

4. They Work Well With Appliques

Placing appliques on some fabrics can be difficult considering how much they fray. Because batik is stiffer, it’s more amenable to appliques. However, it can also be more difficult to sew in these accents for the same reason.
