An estimated one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in their lives. In order to spread awareness and combat this potentially life-threatening condition, Kealakekua, HI’s best hospital is sponsoring Breast Cancer Awareness Month. There’s no better time than this October to spread awareness to all the mothers, daughters, and women in your life. So join Kona Community Hospital in helping to save lives and support the community.

This year alone, more than 40,000 women in the country will die from breast cancer. The good news is that death rates have continued to drop since 1989, likely thanks to earlier diagnoses, more advanced treatments, and increased awareness. To continue to fight this disease, early detection is crucial.

Due to the prevalence of this cancer, all women are encouraged to conduct a breast self-exam every month. If you’ve never been instructed on the proper way to inspect your breasts, talk to your doctor. In general, you should start by looking into the mirror and examining the breasts for any changes, including in size, color, or shape. If you notice anything different, including puckering, dimples, bulges, rashes, or lumps — visit your doctor as soon as possible. Examine your breasts again with your arms straight up in the air, as well as when you’re lying down. Your doctor should also give you an examination on at least an annual basis.

Around age 40, it’s time to start talking to your doctor about regular mammograms. For those with a family history of the disease, early screenings are particularly vital. By diagnosing this condition in its earliest stages, the chances of fighting it are much higher

This October, take control of your breast health by conducting regular breast self-exams, visiting your doctor, and spreading the word.
