Rain gutters keep water from running down the side of your home and pooling at its base. Old, broken, or damaged gutters can result in mold growth on the siding and, eventually, water seeping into your foundation. This can cause structural problems. Some gutter issues can be patched. However, the following requires new rain gutter installation.

When Is It Time to Get New Gutters?

1. Large Cracks

Small holes caused by pests or falling tree branches can usually be repaired, especially if the gutters are fairly new. However, drainage channels may develop large leaks throughout the system as they age, allowing water to pour down the siding. The metal or plastic itself may be damaged, or the seams joining two gutter sections may come apart.

2. Broken Fasteners

The fasteners that attach the gutters to your roof can also corrode with time. A single broken or missing clasp can usually be fixed, but if several are damaged, the entire system may need to be replaced.

Missing fasteners can cause water to seep inside your walls, where it can promote mold growth and wood rot. Gutters pulling away from the building are one of the most common signs of broken or missing fasteners and should be addressed immediately.

3. Sagging Gutters

Gutters run at a slight slope to keep rainwater flowing toward the downspouts. Sagging gutters collect water, which can attract pests, create a breeding ground for mold, and overflow every time it rains. They also pull at the roof, which can damage shingles.

A single piece running at the wrong pitch can usually be adjusted by a gutter installation professional. However, sagging sections are usually too worn to support the weight of rainwater and will usually need to be replaced.
