After the palm tree, the live oak is the perhaps Florida's most iconic tree. Long-limbed, reaching plaintively, and often festooned with Spanish moss, it’s romantic and picturesque. However, it’s prone to a number of problems, and professional tree preservation measures are sometimes necessary. If you have live oaks on your property, below are some of the issues to be aware of.

Common Issues With the Live Oak Tree

Oak Root Fungus

Root fungus spreads from root to root—and even underground—from nearby trees. It occurs most frequently in urban areas and produces white and brown mushrooms that cause cankers and lesions. It can lead to oak death, so tree preservation measures by a certified arborist may be needed. Do not prune or remove affected trees without oversight, because this could simply spread the disease.

Black Twig Borers

tree preservationBlack twig borers rarely kill their host but rather damage the aesthetics and limit growth. During spring, females tunnel into small branches, where they lay their eggs. The insect activity causes branches to turn brown and die, so the most effective tree preservation solution involves removing and destroying the infected branches.

Gall Wasps

Gall wasps lay eggs in the leaves and stems of the tree and form "galls"—large, tumor-like growths that house the larvae. Galls are less dangerous than they are unappealing to look at, although they should be removed as soon as possible because they can cause branches to die and become defoliated. In general, chemical applications are not effective because the live wasps are present for such a short time. The galls must be removed manually.
