After erecting the steel-frame for your industrial building, you’ll have to decide whether to cover the shell with fabric or metal. Metal is durable and stable, while fabric lets in light and creates a mobile structure. Here are some advantages and disadvantages of fabric and metal buildings to help you determine which is more appropriate for your needs.

Fabric Buildings

metal buildingAlso known as tension membrane structures, fabric buildings consist of a large piece of fabric pulled taut or molded over a steel frame. Fabric structures don’t conduct heat or cold, making it easy to control their indoor temperature. They’re also generally resistant to water and naturally well-lit, which can reduce energy usage.

While fabric buildings are made to withstand the elements, they can rip during strong winds or if struck with debris. A small rip can quickly become a larger tear and expose the interior to the elements, so this kind of structure is not recommended for industries handling hazardous chemicals.

Metal Buildings

In a metal building, your steel frame is covered with pre-built trusses or custom-fitted steel or aluminum sheathing panels. Their heavy-duty metal is naturally resistant to heat, mold, and termites, and can be additionally coated against rain and snow. Metal buildings withstand environmental and operational wear and tear, and never experience decay, ripping, or warping.

Like any other metal, metal buildings are prone to corrosion and water leaks. They must be built on a concrete foundation, but this usually qualifies them for lower insurance rates than fabric buildings due to their structural soundness.
