How to Make a Pole Barn Wind-Resistant
A pole barn is a strong and sturdy structure that offers dependable protection and storage for vehicles, agricultural equipment, hay, or farm animals. But they’re not invincible, and steps should be taken to ensure they’re properly braced for maximum wind resistance. Here are a few ways to go about doing this.
Build in the Right Position
Before starting construction on your pole barn, orient it into a position that provides the strongest reinforcement. First, determine which direction the wind most often comes from where you’re building. Once you’ve made the best guess possible, erect the shortest side of the building facing this direction.
Install Diagonal Wall Braces
Diagonal braces add extra support to the walls. Extend two-by-four braces from the eaves to the base of the barn. They should be installed at 45-degree angles from the vertical poles that hold the barn upright. Nail them securely along the top and bottom of the structure.
Then, diagonally install four-foot square pieces of exterior plywood in two triangles. Position one triangle at the top of each vertical post, with the longer side on top and the point even with the pole. Nail in place all the way around.
Install Roof Sheathing
Sheathing creates a positive roof diaphragm that reinforces the pole barn against strong winds. Use half-inch exterior plywood as the base of the roof. Beginning at the ridgeline, stagger the joints of each plywood sheet. Nail them to the roof trusses with penny nails, and trim off any excess plywood at the eaves. With a little hard work, you’ve just built yourself some peace of mind.
