Whether you’re keeping livestock or feed in your pole barns, hygiene is essential. The farm environment makes it easy for disease to linger for a considerable amount of time while spreading between animals and people. Keep your barn clean and practice the following hygiene tactics to prevent the spread of bacteria and viruses.

Hygiene Tips for Maintaining Pole Barns

1. Clean Daily

Daily cleaning is essential to keeping down the fly population, minimizing dust, and killing bacteria before it has a chance to spread. Clean out the pens and stalls daily, remove your manure to a safe distance. Sweep and rake daily as well. Clean up as you work, and conduct a tidy-up at the end of each day to keep your space organized.

2. Encourage Hand Disinfecting

3. Remove Possible Threats

In enclosed spaces such as pole barns, bacteria can spread quickly. Remove anything that seems like it could be a threat to the barn’s environment. For example, old feed or manure should be immediately removed from the premises. A sick animal should be moved to an isolated area and remain quarantined until your veterinarian gives them the clear to return. Disinfect the affected area before placing any new animals or feed there.
