Pole barns are ideal for adding storage space to a property, as they’re easy to install and maintain. However, natural elements and age can speed up their deterioration when left unchecked, so they do need regular upkeep. If your client is interested in having you install one, help them keep it in good condition by giving them the following tips.

How to Maintain the Condition of Pole Barns

1. Clear Debris

The roof, gutters, andpole barns downspouts collect debris from inclement weather and the surrounding landscape. However, this debris can build up and obstruct water run-off, which can lead to moisture problems.

The extra weight may also be too much for the gutters to handle, resulting in sagging or eventual collapse. Remind your clients to remove leaves, sticks, and dirt from the structure as frequently as possible.

2. Check for Leaks & Drafts

Make sure your clients look for signs of leakages and air drafts. If they leave these issues unattended, their pole barn may develop water damage, mold growth, decay, and corrosion. You can help prevent these issues by improving their insulation and seal any drafty areas as needed.

3. Consider the Landscaping

The exterior walls protect the contents of the pole barn from inclement weather and harsh elements. Your client can add further protection by creating a natural windbreak with trees around the perimeter. They can also grade the surrounding soil lower than the structure’s floor.

Remind your client to avoid kicking up gravel and other hard objects that may dent the metal siding when mowing around the barn. If their barn is on a farm, urge them never to spray pesticides and weed killers near the structure to prevent paint damage.
