Wood fencing is an attractive, traditional option that comes in many styles, like picket and split rail fencing. Over time, however, this material can experience wear and tear from the elements. Most wood fences have a lifespan of about 15 years. Here are a few ways to tell it's time to have the old fence removed and a new one installed.

When Should You Replace Wood Fencing?

1. Wood Rot

Wood is vulnerable to rot, especially when it gets wet. Rot stains, weakens, and crumbles the wood, spreading from the spot where it starts. There's no fix for rotten wood. You may also have similar problems if the wood is infested with termites or beetles, which eat away at it and leave it weak. In these cases, the fence should be replaced.

2. Loose, Missing, & Damaged Parts

Wood FencingIf there's one plank or fastener that's damaged, you can replace it. But as your fence gets older, it may start to come apart in many places at once. This is a sign that the materials themselves are at the end of their lifespan. At this point, the fence will need such frequent repairs that it's often more cost-effective to get a new one.

3. Leaning

A loose or sagging fence rail can be replaced, but the posts supporting it are more difficult to repair. To fix a shifting or leaning post, you would have to remove the post from the ground and reset it, likely filling in the previous hole. It's a labor-intensive process. If your fence needs several of these repairs, you might as well have your contractor replace the worn-out posts.
