From sea turtles to humpback whales, Hawaii’s waters are home to an abundance of magnificent sea creatures. One of the majestic mammals commonly found near the islands is the dolphin, or “nai‘a” in Hawaiian. A variety of dolphin species are often spotted during the dolphin excursions led by EO Waianae Tours. Here, their team shares three of the most common species.
3 Species to Look for on a Dolphin Excursion
1. Spinner Dolphins
Often found near shore, these dolphins rest during the daytime after feeding in deep waters at night. Their name comes from their unique ability to spin up to six times while leaping into the air. All of the main islands are popular sighting spots, and pods are known to congregate in shallow bays.
2. Spotted Dolphins
Spotted dolphins are similar in appearance to spinners. One simple way to tell them apart is by searching for the spotted dolphin’s distinctive white tip on their rostrum, or “beak.” Mature dolphins also have a distinguishable spotted pattern that runs the length of their bodies. Often seen in channels between the islands, these dolphins may be found in pods of hundreds.
3. Bottlenose Dolphins
The iconic bottlenose dolphin is entirely gray and larger in stature than other dolphins. While spinners and spotted dolphins typically grow up to 7 feet in length, bottlenose dolphins can reach double this size, between 10 and 14 feet and weighing nearly 1,000 pounds. They tend to travel in smaller pods, with 10 dolphins or fewer, and are known for their playful natures. Don’t be surprised to find one splashing in a boat’s wake or whale’s bow wave!
