The promise of glimpsing beautiful marine life up close is enough to excite any first-time snorkeler. But before embarking on this aquatic adventure, you’ll need the appropriate snorkeling gear. Here is a guide to help you get started.

How to Choose Snorkeling Gear

1. Masks

If you spend the majority of your time adjusting your snorkeling mask because it’s leaking or too tight, you won’t be able to enjoy the brilliant sights. Focus primarily on fit. Find one with a rubber seal, and pay attention to the way it adheres to your skin. It should create a water-tight seal that prevents leaks and fogging. To test this, hold your breath, taking care not to inhale as you place the mask on your face. The right one should sit flush to your face without you holding it.

2. Snorkels

Oahu, HI snorkeling gearYour snorkel helps you breathe while you’re submerged in the water. Several styles are available, including models with a closing mechanism, known as a dry top, that prevents water from entering at all. For best results, try the snorkel on with your mask to ensure they work well with one another. Then check the mouth piece. Are you biting down hard to keep it still? Then it’s the wrong fit for you. The ideal mouth piece will fit nicely without depending on you to put pressure on it.

3. Fins

There are two different varieties of fins, which are sometimes known as flippers: full foot and open heel. The former allows you to snorkel comfortably in warm water, and is ideal for beginner snorkelers because of their easy wear and light weight. The sturdier open heel variety is for those diving in colder waters who need a more powerful kick. No matter which type of fin you select, check that it fits snugly, but not tightly. There should be only the smallest hint of space if you slip a finger between the back of the fin and your heel.
