If you’re on a beautiful Hawaii excursion, you’ll probably fill your days with plenty of time out on the water. Whale watching is the perfect opportunity to soak in some sun and explore the world around you. As you gaze at these magnificent creatures, you may be curious about the way they live and how they raise their young. Take a look at some interesting facts about whales and their babies.

The Birth Process

Humpback whales take their time during the gestation process. The period lasts just shy of 12 months, and they reproduce every couple of years. When born, the baby calf measures up to 15 feet long and can weigh up to a ton. When they are born, the tail typically emerges first.

During whale watching, you can often spot a baby based on its color. At birth, the calf may appear a very light shade of gray before the melanin begins to take effect. Before long, they take on a deeper hue.

Growth & Weaning

Waianae, HI whale watchingThe baby whale’s formative years are spent growing stronger. The calves feed on their mother’s milk, which is filled with vital nutrients, proteins, and fat content.

Since the mother has such large mammary glands, she can produce a spectacular amount of milk in a single day, enabling her young to gain sufficient weight at a fast rate. By the age of three, most whales have weaned completely and are ready to mix and mingle with other whales.

Communication Is Quiet

Studies have found that to safely communicate and evade potential capture from unsavory predators—such as nearby killer whales—baby whales and their mothers may whisper to one another. It’s also markedly different from the loud, reverberating noises that male whales produce to attract their female counterparts during mating season.
