Whether it’s to go snorkeling or just sightseeing, when you’re on a catamaran tour, sun protection must always be a priority. Since you’ll be out on the water and directly under the sun for a few hours, you need to take precautions against harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. Aside from painful sunburns, they can lead to premature wrinkles, brown spots, and skin cancer. To ensure adequate protection, follow these tips.

Do:

Reapply sunscreen frequently.

No matter what the product or manufacturer may claim, sunscreen doesn’t last for hours. To stay protected, reapply it every 80 minutes or so. If you’ve been swimming or snorkeling, aim for every 60 minutes instead.

Also, make sure to apply it at least 15 minutes before you head outside. If you’re putting it on as the catamaran tour starts, your skin will be a bit vulnerable at the beginning.

Aside from keeping your skin safe, you must also consider how your sunscreen can affect the aquatic ecosystem. Avoid products containing oxybenzone and octinoxate; studies have shown that these chemicals can bleach and kill coral. Hawaii has even passed a bill banning the sale sunscreen with oxybenzone and octinoxate to counteract the damage done to the reefs.

Don’t:

Forget additional means of sun protection.

Along with sunscreen, pack sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat. If possible, you should also bring a lightweight garment, like a thin jacket or shawl, to cover the skin when the sun is at its highest. On a catamaran tour, there are limited areas for shade. Even then, the sun’s rays can bounce off the water, bright paint, or the sails.

Only focus on what’s exposed.

Sunscreen needs to be applied everywhere, even the areas covered with clothing. Although attention should be spent on the face, hands, chest, and anywhere else the sun hits consistently, smaller spots, like the back of the neck or ear lobes, should not be ignored. When in doubt, be liberal in applying sunscreen to the skin.
