Gravel is an easy and attractive solution for a new driveway. It’s also easy to install and maintain. There are just a few periodic steps you need to take to keep this material in quality condition. Here’s a guide.

3 Gravel Driveway Maintenance Tips

1. Rake Away Debris

Leaves, sticks, and other debris can easily fall onto a gravel driveway, and may even get stuck between the rocks. A quality metal rake is often the easiest way to remove these items, and it won’t damage the gravel. Rake about once a week to keep the surface clean and even, and remove any weeds that you notice popping through.

2. Add Water

When you first install your gravel driveway, use a garden hose to apply a light layer of water over the rocks and soil. This softens the soil, allowing the gravel to more easily settle into place. Throughout the life of your driveway, you may also add a light layer of water during especially dry periods, especially if you notice a lot of dust around your driveway. Gravel eventually grinds down into dust, and it’s more likely to break apart when the stones are dry, so water can extend the lifespan of your current materials.

3. Compact & Fill Potholes

Though gravel is easy to redistribute, the ground underneath can still get damaged by excessive moisture or weight, forming potholes that can damage your vehicle or create a tripping hazard. To remove potholes, use a compactor or heavy roller to clamp down the soil. Then add extra gravel over the top and rake until the surface is level. You may also need to add extra gravel every couple years to keep the whole surface covered.
