Engagement rings, just like all styles of jewelry, have changed drastically over the years. While some decades were focused on simplicity, others were all about the glitz. Whether you like the styling of antiques or are looking for a modern vibe, use the guide below to find the perfect engagement ring for your significant other.

Styles From the Early to Mid-1900s

1930s

The ‘30s were split; the first half of the decade was wrapped up in Art Deco styling, and the Retro look dominated the second half. Art Deco engagement rings often featured clean lines and colorful stones with platinum or white gold bands. Retro rings, on the other hand, had delicate ribbon bands with curlicue and floral detailing. If you hunt around, you can find these types of jewelry at pawn shops today.

1940s & 1950s

Because of World War II, many materials were scarce in the ‘40s. Diamonds were not affordable for the masses, so many engagement rings were antiques recycled from previous generations. Platinum wasn't a common selection anymore; instead, bands were most often yellow gold or sometimes rose gold. In 1948, De Beers released their iconic “a diamond is forever” ad campaign and launched the next diamond craze. Because the war had ended, most materials were available again, and platinum was back in style. Many women wanted large, round center stones flanked with side accents, pear-shaped diamond solitaires, or stackable rings with a trio of bands.

Celebrity Inspiration From the Late 1900s

Antiques1960s & 1970s

Engagement rings in the ‘60s were all about square- and Asscher-cut stones, largely thanks to Elizabeth Taylor’s Krupp diamond ring. The next decade, they often consisted of clusters of stones surrounding a large round- or emerald-cut diamond. If you love the bold, glitzy looks of these decades, look for such jewelry in pawn shops at a fraction of their retail value.

1980s & 1990s

Because of Princess Diana's sapphire gemstone engagement ring, colored gemstones became all the rage in the ‘80s. Round-cut diamonds and shiny gold bands were also popular throughout this decade. In the ‘90s, the marquise-cut diamond emerged as a notable option.

Recent Engagement Ring Trends

While the early 2000s were focused on princess-cut and cushion-cut diamonds, thin bands with oval diamonds have become prevalent in the past several years. These days, many couples are also concerned whether diamonds are ethically sourced or not. Even though some are choosing other precious stones, a classic diamond solitaire on a simple band is still a top choice. One of the hottest trends in recent years is partnering heirloom or antique diamonds with recycled precious metal bands.
