Whether you loved comic books as a kid or you’re just discovering them as an adult, collecting them is an exciting and fun pastime. People who are new to this hobby often wonder where to start and what items they should keep an eye out for to enhance their collections. This guide includes useful tips to help new collectors get started.

How to Start a Comic Book Collection

1. Learn About Popular Artists & Writers

Every comic book icon has a signature style. If you’re just starting out, you may hear the names of well-known artists and writers, but you might not recognize their work. However, enthusiasts are deeply familiar with the works and styles of these people. Study up on different industry contributors and browse their comic books to learn more about them.

2. Start Slowly

When you think of a comic book collector, you may imagine a person with hundreds or thousands of books. However, even someone with a small, cherished set can be a collector. What matters most is that the pieces you own excite and interest you. If budget is a concern, set aside a specific amount of money each month that you can put toward your new hobby.

3. Shop From Different Sources

However, don’t forget to check collector’s stores, pawnshops, flea markets, yard sales, and garage sales. You never know what exciting finds you’ll come across while perusing these different sources.

4. Understand the Grading System

Comic books are graded based on their condition. A poor score of 0.5 indicates that the book may have torn or missing pages, a missing cover, or other severe damage. This rating isn’t necessarily bad. Older comic books can still be quite valuable, even if they show some signs of wear and tear.

Books rated 10.0 are considered to be in perfect—or gem mint—condition. These pieces have no damage and can be extremely valuable since they are flawless.
