Not all cracked windshields are created equal. While some can be addressed through windshield crack repair, other types of damage will require a complete replacement of the auto glass. Understanding how different types of cracked windshields affect the safety and integrity of the glass will help you know what to expect when you visit a repair shop.

What Are Some Types of Windshield Cracks?

1. Edge Cracks

Edge cracks start either at the very edge of the windshield or within 2 inches of the edge. These cracks typically range from 2 to 12 inches in length and can grow quite quickly. These cracks are often the result of environmental stress and aging. Because the damage extends to the edge of the windshield, this type of crack greatly weakens the structural integrity of the glass. Windshields with this type of damage should be replaced.

2. Rock Chips

A rock chip occurs after the windshield is hit by rock or other road debris. This usually results in a small chip or pit in the glass, which may or may not have a crack smaller than a quarter surrounding the impact area. This type of damage can be repaired in most circumstances, though repairs should be done as soon as possible to keep the crack from spreading.

3. Floater Cracks

Floater cracks appear in the middle of the windshield and often grow from a rock chip that wasn’t repaired in a timely manner. The length, width, and depth of the crack will determine whether the windshield needs to be repaired or replaced. If the crack obscures the driver’s line of sight, a replacement will be required, as the repair resin leaves a slightly smudged appearance on the repaired area.
