Icy windshields are sometimes inevitable during the winter. Clearing your auto glass is essential for improving visibility and maintaining safe driving conditions. However, using incorrect methods can damage the vehicle. This guide discusses some do’s and don’ts to keep your car intact.

Do:

Start the car.

As soon as you get out to your car, turn on its defroster. Turning on the engine will heat the vehicle, while the defroster will blow air onto the windshield.

Ensure the vents are unobstructed, and gently rev the engine while in park to speed up the melting process.

Use a scraper.

After removing excess snow with the tool’s brush end, you’ll have easy access to the auto glass. Loosen up the ice with a can of liquid deicer. These products typically mix methanol and propylene glycol, which melt ice on contact. After spraying the surface, the ice should come off easily with light scraping motions across the auto glass. Remove buildup from the entire surface for full visibility.

Don’t:

Leave wipers against the windshield.

If you know that a snowstorm is forecasted, gently pull your wipers away from the windshield so that they don’t get stuck under the snow.

If you forget to do this, the blades will be stuck in place until the ice thaws. Removing them beforehand will speed up the windshield clearing process.

Choose the wrong tools.

Pouring boiling water over the car may sound like a viable solution in a pinch, but hot water does far more damage than good. When scalding water meets ice, the extreme temperature difference can shatter the glass.

Also, choose your scraper carefully. Metal blades may seem strong and effective, but metal can shear off the coating on the windshield. A plastic blade is a safer bet.
