When it’s properly cared for, wood can last for many years. Your wooden cabinets, whether they’re in the bathroom or the kitchen, will require routine cleaning. Avoid some of the most common mistakes that other homeowners make in cleaning their cabinets, which can do more harm than good.

3 Mistakes to Avoid When Cleaning Wood Cabinets

1. Too Much Water

Water and wood don’t mix. Too much water will go through your finish and warp the wood underneath. You can clean the surface with a damp cloth, but wring it out completely before applying it to the cabinet. You should not see beads of water left behind on the wood when dragging the rag across. Dry the surface carefully after you finish cleaning.

2. Ammonia

cabinetsNever use ammonia to clean your wood, since the harsh chemical can eat through the finish. If you have cabinetry with glass doors, spray the cloth with your ammonia solution rather than the glass, so the wood doesn’t get any accidental spray.

To clean your wood, use a specialized soap such as Murphy® Oil Soap, or a half-and-half solution of vinegar and warm water.

3. Coarse Scrubbers

Scrubbing the surface with a coarse material, such as the backside of a sponge or steel wool, will dull the finish and leave behind visible scratches. Remove the tougher grime with your half-and-half vinegar solution and a soft-bristled toothbrush. Wipe up spills or grease splatter immediately, since they will only get more difficult to remove with time.
