Propane tanks are essential if you plan to grill this summer. This type of fuel can also be used for other household activities, like cooking indoors and powering the AC unit. Part of using propane responsibly is ensuring extreme summer temperatures or weather don’t have a negative impact on the tank. As a result, there are several essential storage tips to follow. Here are some of the most important ways to protect your supply.

Do:

Keep tanks in the shade.

High temperatures cause the propane in a tank to expand. The heat increases pressure levels inside the tank, which can eventually damage the metal. In rare cases, the tank could even explode from the pressure. All outdoor tanks should be stored in a shaded area.

Check for leaks.

Propane is highly flammable and may ignite if the tank has a leak and is located near a heat source. Check the tank regularly for damage and leaks. The easiest way to spot a problem is by spraying soapy water onto the outside of the container. Slowly open the cylinder valve and see if soap bubbles form anywhere around the exterior. If so, there is a leak, and your propane supplier will need to replace the tank.

Don’t:

Store tanks near your home.

Propane tanks should be stored at least 10 feet away from your home to reduce the fire risk. Consider building a simple frame structure in the yard and covering it with a tarp. This will prevent excessive sunlight exposure and help keep the tank cool. Empty containers can be safely stored inside an outbuilding or shed since they don’t pose a fire risk.

Place them on uneven surfaces.

Whether you’re using the propane tank or storing an empty one, always ensure it sits on a level surface. Storing tanks on their sides or stacking multiple on top of one another causes pressure changes inside the tanks that can damage them. Keep them upright on a wooden pallet, and purchase rubber shims to level out uneven surfaces.
