Pilot lights are still prevalent in older furnaces; if yours goes out, it helps to know the correct way to relight it. Doing so incorrectly can result in a serious safety hazard for your family. Most systems have instructions for relighting the pilot posted on the side of the furnace or in the owner’s manual. If not, here’s how to safely relight the pilot.

How to Relight Your Furnace’s Pilot Light

1. Find Pilot Light Assembly

The pilot light controls are usually on the front of the furnace. Look for the pilot light assembly, which should have three settings for the gas valve: on, off, and pilot. There should also be a visible pilot reset button.

2. Turn Valve Off

Find the gas valve and turn it to the off position. Wait a few minutes for the leftover gas to dissipate.

3. Switch Valve to Pilot

After a few minutes, turn the gas valve to the pilot position. Then, using a barbecue lighter or a long match, hold the flame to the pilot opening while simultaneously holding down the pilot reset button. You should see the pilot flame appear.

4. Press Button

After the pilot light is lit, continue holding down the pilot reset button for at least 60 seconds. Once it seems the light is holding steady and strong, let go of the pilot reset button and turn the gas valve to the on position.

5. Call for Service

If, after attempting to light the pilot light, it still goes out, contact a heating contractor for service. You may need a new thermocouple, which senses when the flame is lit. This can also mean that gas is still flowing even though the flame isn’t lit, which is a serious safety hazard. Call for service immediately and open up a door or window near the furnace to ensure gas doesn’t build up in your home.
