If you heat your home with propane gas, you may notice that, occasionally, the regulator on your tank freezes. While many customers are concerned or curious about frost buildup, this common issue is usually not something to worry about. Below is an introduction to your propane regulator and what causes it to freeze.

What Causes a Propane Gas Regulator to Freeze?

The regulator adjusts the pressure of propane gas for delivery or use. Frost can occur on the regulator even under normal operation. While stored, the gas is under constant pressure that condenses it into liquid propane (LP). However, when a fluid evaporates—or transforms from liquid to gas—it absorbs heat from any surfaces it's touching.

Propane gasWhen the propane passes through the regulator and takes gaseous form, it pulls heat from the regulator surface. Elevated humidity levels in the outdoor air will cause moisture to condense on the cooler metal. If the condensation gets cold enough, it will turn to frost.

What Are the Problems Associated With Frozen Regulators?

If the tank is overfilled or if it does not remain upright, the liquid can leak out of the valve and into the regulator. This will cause the gas to lose pressure and evaporate, resulting in freezing. If you are experiencing frost formation on your propane gas regulator, ensure that the tank is situated properly and that it has not been overfilled.

Leakage could be dangerous, so return the canister to an upright position. If it’s too full, the propane will come out of the nozzle as a near liquid. Have a propane service professional replace your tank with one that's properly filled.
