From natural disasters, such as storms and floods, to malfunctioning appliances, sewage backups, and burst pipes, water damage has many causes. Regardless of the source, if not addressed appropriately, water in your home may lead to significant long-term problems. If you find water in your home, follow these do’s and don'ts to help minimize its effects before they worsen and lead to extensive water damage repair

Do:

Turn off electricity.

Reduce the risk of electrical shock in a flood by turning off your electricity at its source. Avoid touching any water-soaked electrical appliances or standing in water while the power remains on.

Stop the flow of water.

Protect your valuables.

Remove money, heirlooms, jewelry, and artwork from flooded areas. Place wads of foil under furniture legs to raise them off wet floors, remove area rugs, and lift drapes above the waterline by looping them through a coat hanger or draping them over a curtain rod.

Don't:

Try to vacuum up excess water.

Standard household vacuums are not equipped to suction up even small amounts of water. Attempting to run your vacuum to clean up water will damage your machine and pose an electrical hazard.

Attempt to clean up sewage water.

If the water in your septic tank has backed up into your home, don’t try to clean up the mess yourself. Wastewater contains harmful bacteria and methane gases that pose health risks when not handled appropriately.

Wait to call a professional.
