A dumpster rental is an enormous convenience when you need a substantial amount of space to dispose of waste. These roomy receptacles are available in various sizes and can safely hold many heavy-duty materials, from drywall and old flooring to yard debris. Yet, some items aren’t safe to toss in your dumpster. Here are three you should know.

What Can’t You Throw in a Dumpster?

1. Contaminated Soil

If you’re working on a landscaping project, your soil or the surrounding ground may be contaminated. Avoid disposing of this waste in the dumpster, as there’s a risk it could contaminate other areas if it were to blow out or someone comes into contact with it. Instead, find out from your state’s environmental board the location of the nearest drop-off.

2. Cleaning Solutions

While you can toss empty bottles into a recycling bin, containers full of cleaning solutions should not go in a dumpster rental. They could spill out and cause damage to wildlife, groundwater, and the environment. Instead, these items must be disposed of safely. Always follow the package directions for disposal; sometimes, they'll indicate that the product is safe to pour down the drain. If it is, then simply toss the packaging in the trash or recycling can after emptying its contents.

3. Medical Waste

It’s not permissible to throw infectious waste in the receptacle. This includes any type of medical material or anything that has touched bodily fluids. Common examples include used needles and unfinished prescriptions. The exceptions are household bandages and first aid products used for a wound that did not require treatment by a doctor. If you are unsure whether your items are considered infectious hazardous waste, you can contact your nearest health agency to find out where to throw them away safely.
