Many threats may cause a windshield to crack, such as extreme temperature conditions, collisions, or impacts from smaller objects. Different types of damage will cause different types of cracks to form, each requiring unique repair. The following guide looks at some of the most prevalent.

A Guide to Common Cracks in Windshields

1. Bull's Eye

Also known as a chip, this is the most common crack. It forms when a small object, such as a piece of gravel kicked up by a truck you're trailing, hits the glass. A small portion of glass will come out at the impact site, with no cracks spreading from it. These damaged areas can be easily filled with windshield chip repair service, so long as they are addressed before cracks form from vibration and exposure to the elements.

2. Star

Also known as a ding crack, this also occurs when a small object strikes the glass with force. A piece of glass chips off, and small cracks spread out from the center in a starburst pattern. These require even more immediate attention than bull's eye chips.

3. Edge

This crack forms from the edge of the glass, within two inches of the perimeter. They are usually between 10 and 12 inches. No matter how long the crack is, you will need a windshield replacement. The structural integrity of the glass's edge is essential for supporting the car's roof; a fracture weakens it too much.

4. Floater

This crack starts in the center of the windshield and is usually caused by stress from extreme temperature fluctuations. It may be any shape or size. If it's relatively small, under three inches, it can usually be repaired. The glass will need to be replaced if it's longer than that or if it blocks the driver's field of vision.

5. Stress

A stress crack is most often due to extreme temperature fluctuations, such as if hot water is poured directly onto the glass to melt ice. This looks like a spiderweb spread across the glass and will require immediate replacement.
