If you decide to take the road less traveled and find yourself on gravel, you set yourself up for a number of issues. These seemingly-inconsequential pebbles have the ability to get thrown up suddenly, potentially striking your undercarriage or windshield. The guide below looks closer at these risks and what you can do about them.

The Dangers of Driving on a Gravel Road

1. Poor Traction

Loose gravel makes it easy to slip and slide while turning or trying to stop suddenly. You may lose control from poor traction and careen off the road. Many remote gravel roads have small roadside recovery areas and are much further from towing services, so you may not receive the help you need for some time.

Again, drive slowly. If you’ll be traveling on gravel roads, check your tire treads. Push a quarter into one of the grooves with George Washington’s head pointing down. If you can see the top of his head, it means your treads are low, increasing the likelihood of skidding.

2. Flying Rocks

The likelihood drastically increases if you’re behind a vehicle that’s making gravel airborne. This damage not only drops the value of your vehicle, but windshield cracks can impact your visual field.

If you’re forced to drive on a gravel road, go slow to avoid disturbing the rocks. Additionally, make sure to stay at least a car’s distance between yourself and other drivers as well.

3. Parts Damage

Gravel may not kick up to your windshield or exterior, but it can still cause undercarriage issues. Wiring, brake systems, fuel lines, exhaust systems, and more can all be knocked loose or damaged while driving on gravel. This is especially likely if your car is low to the ground. In addition to driving slowly, be on the lookout for potholes that could cause your car to dip and get closer to the road.
